Why am I so excited? Well for starters, I love Kate’s work as a stylist. Not only does she dress Natalie Portman and Maggie Gyllenhaal, but she happens to work with one of my favourite celebrities on the red carpet: Michelle Williams! I’ve also had the opportunity to meet and interview Kate Young when she stopped by Toronto to present her collection at the official Target Canada launch event… and I can tell you that she’s really cool. Here’s what she shared with me.
When Target first approached you for this project, what was your reaction?
I was so excited because working on gowns is my favourite part of my job and I wanted to try to find a way to do it all year long, besides awards season. Plus, I was hoping to find a way to create a line of evening dresses that was affordable. So when Target called, it was like a dream come true… The team is incredible, and it’s been really fun to make dresses that people will be able to wear and afford… and, I hope, have a good time in!
Did the clients that you dress inspire you when you designed the collection?
Yes! I’m really lucky to work with women that are amazing on many levels. All my clients have different bodies and they have different ways they like to present themselves, so I learn a lot about what kind of dresses are flattering and I understand now what works. So I feel that my regular fittings plus my work with celebrities, have both inspired this collection.
Can you describe your collection in a few words?
What I wanted to capture with this line was the magic of evening, this idea of old Hollywood glamour and fun… and champagne and the midnight sky! I wanted women to put the dresses on and feel glamorous and beautiful! That’s really the essence of the collection.
