If you’ve been reading me for a little time, you know that the MET Gala is my favourite red carpet event! And with this year’s theme (Heavenly Bodies : Fashion and the catholic imagination), I knew that I was in for a real treat! Here are ALL the looks that you need to see from last night!
BEST DRESSED
1- Zendaya in Versace
When I saw Zendaya, my jaw dropped! I love everything about this modern Joan of Arc look created by Versace… the silhouette, the crocheted fabric and the structured armour. In looooove!
2- Blake Lively en Versace
As co-host of the gala, Donatella Versace dressed most of the big names of the night including Blake Lively. The actress stole the show with this fully embroidered dress that took 600 hours to make.
3- Janelle Monae en Marc Jacobs
This wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but I loved how the dress perfectly suited Janelle’s signature style, as well as the event! And that head piece is just to die for!
4- Solange en Iris Van Herpen
Solange is another great example on how to stay yourself, while respecting the theme of the event. The look might seem more futuristic than religious, but to me it’s an amazing representation of good vs evil.
5- Priyanka Chopra en Ralph Lauren
Priyanka Chopra was nothing less than mesmerizing in this custom-made Ralph Lauren dress. The velvet burgundy is perfect for her skin tone and the intricate head piece has a beautiful Indian feel to it.
6- Bella Hadid en Gareth Pugh
I never thought Bella Hadid would be part of my favourites, but I absolutely adore this black widow inspired look. The embroidered crosses on the skirt and on her (sewn to her head) veil are a very nice touch!
7- Taylor Hill en Diane Von Furstenberg
I know that this cardinal-inspired dress is very literal, but I love everything about the silhouette, especially the high slit and the small cape. The only thing I would’ve removed is the white cross.
8- Imaan Hammam en Zac Posen
Simplicity can be dramatic… and this dress by Zac Posen on the stunning Imaan Hammam is the ultimate proof!
OVER THE TOP (but so fabulous)!!
With a theme like Fashion and the catholic imagination, we could expect a few over the top looks… and thankfully, that’s exactly what we got! Starting with Katy Perry in Versace, who worked the Met Museum staircase with Victoria’s Secret sized wings.
THEME-WORTHY
Even though these ladies didn’t make the best dressed list, they’re still worth mentioning for making such a great effort to embody the theme! Diane Kruger‘s embroidered dress by Prabal Gurung is the perfect example!
Theme worthy : Religious iconography
Catholic iconography was everywhere last night… but Ariana Grande (in Vera Wang), Stella Maxwell (in Moschino) and Emilia Clarke (in Dolce & Gabbana) were definitely my favourites!
Theme worthy : Fashion armour
With Zendaya leading the pack, the glam armour look was definitely a big trend last night. I especially loved Michelle Williams, Emma Stone and Jennifer Connelly… all in Louis Vuitton!
Theme worthy : Modern medieval
The medieval era inspired many of the stars on the red carpet. Among my favourites… Laura Dern (in Proenza Schouler), Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen (in The Row) and Lily Collins (in Gvenchy).
Theme worthy : Fit for a queen
Love how royal Kristin Scott Thomas (in Erdem), Mindy Kaling (in Vassilis Zoulias + Pericles Kondylatos crown) and Lynda Carter aka Wonder Woman (in Zac Posen + Ellen Christine Couture tiara) looked in their ball gowns!
BIGGEST TRENDS
City of angels
With no surprise, many stars took the angelic / virgin / pure route and wore white ethereal dresses… completed with veils, crowns ore tiaras. Kate Bosworth did exactly that with her Oscar de la Renta bridal inspired gown.
So did SZA (in Versace), Rosie Huntington Whiteley (in Versace) and Hailey Baldwin (in Tommy Hilfiger).
… and Kendall Jenner (in OFF-WHITE), Anna Wintour (in Chanel), Sarah Paulson (in Prada) and Jourdan Dunn (in Diane Von Furstenberg).
I promise, I’m almost done… Here are angels Hailee Steinfeld (in Prabal Gurung), Winnie Harlow (in Tommy Hilfiger + headpiece by Odd Commodities), Sasha Lane (in Tory Burch) and Yara Shahidi (in Chanel).
Red
Red was definitely a hot colour last night…. and Amber Heard (in Carolina Herrera) was without a doubt the hottest!
Other ladies who embraced the classic colour included : Nicki Minaj (in Oscar de la Renta), Anne Hathaway (in Valentino), Cindy Crawford (in Versace) and Bee Shaffer (in Valentino).
Gold
As expected, gold was a huge trend on the red carpet! Irina Shayk (in Versace), Evan Rachel Wood (in Altuzarra), Kim Kardashian (in Versace) and Olivia Munn (in H&M) all embraced the gorgeous metallic shade!
So did Jasmine Sanders (in H&M), Kerry Washington (in Ralph Lauren), Emily Ratajkowski (in Marc Jacobs) and Juliette Binoche (in Balmain).
Capes
Ending the night’s biggest trends with the capes! Among the ladies who rocked them, I loved Tessa Thompson (in Thom Browne), Rooney Mara (in Givenchy), Alicia Vikander (in Louis Vuitton) and Eiza Gonzalez (in Prabal Gurung).
BEST DRESSED MEN
We all love a man who commits… and that works for fashion too! My favourite boys of the night were : Donald Glover (in Gucci), Trevor Noah (in Balmain), Chadwick Boseman (in Versace) and Luka Sabbat (in H&M).
WORST DRESSED
Before getting into the worst individual looks of the night, I have to point out the YSL crew… who looked absolutely out of place at this year’s Met Gala!
1- Amal Clooney in Richard Quinn
I know I’m being very though because Amal Clooney looks beautiful in anything, but as co-host of the gala, she really needed to be amongst the best dressed of the night! To me, this outfit just looks dated.
2- Madonna in Jean Paul Gaultier
I have to say I expected so much more of Madonna, especially with a theme that she tackled with so much in her career. In my opinion, the skirt makes her look short and the rest is too covered up!
3- Lena Dunham in Ronald Van Der Kemp
The idea was kind of good, but the result is kind of scary… especially with the white makeup and the crazy hair.
4- Gisele Bundchen in Versace
I’m sorry Gisele, but this is just too easy… plus the neckline completely distorts your body!
5- Sofia Coppola in Marc Jacobs
I have no problem with Sofia’s minimalistic style and I didn’t expect her to wear a Dolce & Gabbana embroidered gown… but this is just sad!
Before I let you go, here are a few more bad (or just booooring) looks…
