In his 3rd novel, « The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz », 28-year old Mordechai Richler brought to life one of the most beloved heroes (or antihero, really) of Canadian literature, an ambitious rebel and hustler who leaves a trail of disaster in his wake and in doing so, learns what it is to become a man. I guess this is part of the reasons why that classic was on our reading list at the end of high school. I remember highlighting that sentence in my paperback edition : « A boy can be two, three, four potential people, but a man is only one. He murders the others. »
The musical presented until July 12 at the Segal Centre touched the man I have become and made me wonder (and worry) what parts of me I had murdered to get here!!! Food for thought this weekend.
A show about family, love, ambition. About Montreal and so much more, like Mordechai Richler himself!
And a little extra suggestion, before you head to Segal, have supper a few blocks away at another Montreal Jewish institution you should know: Snowdon Deli. That’ll make your evening as complete as it gets.
Extended until July 12 due to popular demand! Also, know that Monday July 6th, the creators of the show will come on stage for one last Q&A discussion.
And don’t worry, a man without land « can » be somebody! But what would an apprenticeship be without a few mistakes on the way…
Enjoy the show!
Joe
